Glen Craig continually strives towards sustainable living and keeping a low carbon footprint.

  • Guests are encouraged to re-use towels / linen in the guestrooms
  • Low-flow showerheads are installed in all guestrooms
  • Woollen rugs – a sustainable source – are used in guestrooms
  • Dustbins in guestrooms are made from cane by the blind from Worcester
  • Quilts on the beds in guestrooms - a self help project
  • All light bulbs at Glen Craig are compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Sensors timers are used in public areas for lighting and for all geysers
  • Lights in guestrooms are switched off when unoccupied. In public areas the heat or air conditioning is turned down when the area is unoccupied. During summer months drapes and blinds are drawn in public areas
  • Food and guest amenities are bought in bulk
  • Recycling bins in kitchen are provided for:- tins, glass, paper and plastic and a recycle bin for paper is provided in the office
  • Recycled paper products are used. The amount of paper used for each guest (i.e. reduce paper size of invoices, etc.) is minimized
  • Aloe Vera, a natural sustainable product is used for amenities packaged in recycled material.
  • Organic and free-range food products and cruelty-free guest amenity products are provided at Glen Craig
  • Nontoxic or least toxic cleaners (vinegar) , sanitizers, pesticides, etc. are used throughout Glen Craig Country House which is a necessity for our septic tank too
  • A solar water heating system is used for the pool, as well a pool chlorinator
  • The stones from the pool cavity, when it was dug out, were recycled to enclose the thatched Lapa stone walls
  • Bicycles, walking maps and information on public transportation are provided to guests when checking in at Glen Craig
  • With all food and beverage services reusable items are used e.g.: - cloth napkins, glass, crockery, stainless steel cutlery, ceramic dishes, etc. Cups and mugs are placed upside down on paper doilies (instead of covering opening with a plastic wrapping)
  • Guestroom beverage trays are provided with glasses and crockery
  • Daylight is used exclusively throughout Glen Craig
  • Earthworms recycle organic waste. Any other materials that can not be used for the worm factories are buried in the ground. “I doubt whether there are many other animals which played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organized creatures.” Charles Darwin
  • Organic, locally-grown food and Glen Craig’s own herb garden are used to provide fresh produce to guests
  • Drought resistant indigenous plants (fynbos) are planted in the gardens
  • Invasive aliens are removed regularly
  • Log fires are made from this alien vegetation, as well for Braai’s
  • An incentive programme is in action to encourage the staff to participate in and improve upon environmentally- friendly practices. We regularly educate staff on these issues.
